Short Story Month Feature: Breaking Right

As I kid, I always loved reading (and rereading) familiar stories. The age-old myths, legends and fables always seemed to be a comfort, but they were also a jumping-off point for creative reinterpretations and more modern themes.

Breaking Right

D.A. Lockhart’s debut short story collection, Breaking Right, captures that feeling of familiarity and folklore, particularly for those dwelling in or around the Midwest. Tales of UFO sightings, big cats and the Mothman are part of the common parlance, but so, too, are quieter, more common tales of natural disasters and love affairs gone wrong. In this collection, finding one’s place geographically, culturally and socially is intimately connected with the stories that each character lives—and tells.
