If you’ve ever picked up one of our books in print, it’s probably pretty obvious to you that we love the art and craft of the book. With premium paper, sewn bindings and award-winning design, we demonstrate a passion for the printing arts that has endured for decades.
It’s little wonder that we are proud to publish, in addition to the fiction, non-fiction and poetry you already know and love, Canada’s journal of the printing arts, the Devil’s Artisan. The Porcupine’s Quill purchased the Devil’s Artisan in the spring of 1995, and has, since then, sought to foster an appreciation of the physical and social aspects of bookmaking in Canada. We explore historical subjects, delve into the work of typographers and book designers, profile small and fine presses across Canada, and shine a spotlight on printmakers and wood engravers.
We’re pleased to have just finished printing the latest issue of the magazine, number 89, and in celebration, we’re giving TWO lucky readers a chance to start their own collection of this long-running publication.
The prize pack includes…
DA 87: including a retrospective on the career of Andrew King, whose Saskatchewan-based King Show Print specialized in the production of very large-format, multi-colour posters; an appreciation of the work of illustrator Walter Trier; a look at Magazine Digest in the context of Jewish identity and cultural nationalism in Canadian publishing; and more.
DA 88: including a history of Ted Snider’s Cranberry Mills, a profile on Karen Schindler of Baseline Press in London, ON; an investigation into the arcane technology behind the David Milne Playing Card Project; and more.
DA 89 (New!): including a feature on private press printer Will Rueter and The Aliquando Press of Dundas, Ontario; a profile of John Wilson (Jack) McLaren, a twentieth-century caricaturist and printmaker; an appreciation of bookbinder and marble Robert Wu; and more.
